Cookie, a shelter rescue Cockapoo pup, spent her first 3 years living outside in a kennel cage because her owner/nurse used her as a therapy dog at Psychiatric clinics. When her owner developed kidney failure and terminal cancer, Cookie spent the whole time in her "cage," neglected and wild. The owner passed away on 9/11/02 and the family wanted to give her back to the shelter, but I knew the dog and "adopted" her. I was watching PetStar one evening and Maggie, a Jack Russell Terrier, was counting with her paw. "Cookie, I bet you could do that!" Cookie started barking correctly when I would ask her age and simple addition. Soon, we advanced to subtraction. I then realized that she was actually "reading my mind." Whatever answer I was thinking, Cookie would bark the answer that I had "in my head." Cookie quickly advanced to multiplication, division, square roots and simple algebra. For example, 15-x=10 so she would bark 5 times. Any math question can be asked in Spanish, which Cookie understands. All performances are audience participation and she delights her public, whether they are 1 to 99! This talented pooch is also able to identify right from left.
Cookie has appeared on KDOC, a local Orange County TV station as well as appearing on "Sabado Gigante", a Univision production in Miami. Please go to video(s) and you can view Cookie's unrehearsed mathematical talent on two live TV shows.
